Batchelors Heating and Air Conditioning was started in 1967 by the father-son team of Bruce and Larry Batchelor focusing on residential HVAC. In 1972 and 74 Dave Fannon and Rick True were added to the team to add engineering and sales expertise. Throughout the 70s, the company grew rapidly, especially in the commercial HVAC and plumbing markets. As a result, Fannon and True were brought into the ownership of the company, and a new corporation, Batchelors Mechanical Contractors was formed.
In the mid 1980s, a trend began in the HVAC industry that recognized the growing opportunity in the residential service and replacement market. Given Batchelors roots as a residential contractor, it was a logical decision to form a division of the company to focus exclusively on the residential homeowner segment of the market. Ron Smith, a nationally recognized leader in the field had recently begun a franchise operation. It was called Service America, and Batchelors soon thereafter purchased the rights for the Mobile and Baldwin county market. Operating under the name Batchelors Service America, the company had rapid growth and several thousand local homeowners invested in Energy Savings Agreements to maintain the systems in their homes. Then in the 90s, Smith sold the name Service America to another national concern and closed his franchise company. Faced with the problem of finding a new name, it was decided the easiest thing was to drop the word America and become Batchelors Service.
In 2002, Edward Leatherbury, one of the company's key employees, purchased the Batchelors Service division. It has continued the same excellent level of service and employed many of the same personnel as always. In March of 2016, Mr. Leatherbury, after a courageous battle with ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Passed away. The company is now owned by his 3 children in a trust established before his death. Rick True, one of the original founders, has returned to manage the company for the family. This ensures that our customers will receive the same level of service and commitment to excellence that has been there since day one.
